Betafert is digestate from the mono-fermenter which was built by SuikerUnie’s factory in Dinteloord. Fermentation is a process in which organic matter is broken down by bacteria to biogas for example. This process generates heat and a liquid fertilizer remains. The fermenter in Dinteloord processes mainly organic products that remain after the production of sugar. Examples of this are beet pulp, beet leafs, beet ends etc. So no animal fertilizer is used.

The digestate that remains after the fermentation process is a high quality organic fertilizer with directly absorbable nutrients. Two products are offered under the name ‘Betafert’.

‘Betafert Basis’ is a crude liquid digestate which is available directly after fermentation. This product is separated in a thin and a thick fraction. The thick fraction is a stackable product and is called ‘Betafert vast’.

Features and advantages

Betafert products are for 100% of vegetable origin and aren’t categorised as animal fertilizer. Legally they are categorised as ‘other organic fertilizers’. This has a number of advantages as opposed to animal fertilizers:

  • No regulations for injecting fertilizers: Betafert doesn’t have to be applied in a way that reduces emission. However, it is advisable to do so.
  • No ban on application during the winter months. Which means it is possible to use Betafert after 1 September.
  • The fertilizer quota of 170/230 kg N/ha doesn’t apply. When the nitrogen and phosphate quota allow, Betafert can be used on top of the fertilizer quota.
  • Instead of sampling per load, the compositions are executed per charge. So the composition is known in advance, which means no surprises after delivery.
  • Favourable effect coefficient of nitrogen of 50%.

Besides the advantages of the legal status, the features of the product itself in use as organic fertilizer are also favourable:

  • The nitrogen is mainly mineral. This guarantees a quick effect and absorption by the crop.
  • Because the input of the fermenter is constant, Betafert has a very constant composition throughout the year.
  • The organic matter in digestate is very stable. This means that after one year a large amount is still present in the soil (high humification coefficient)
  • Fungi and weeds cannot survive the fermentation process. Betafert is therefore phytosanitary safer than other organic fertilizers.

Betafert is available in two formats: Betafert Basis (liquid) and Betafert Vast (Solid, stackable)

Betafert Basis

Betafert Basis is a fertilizer that measures up to any popular variation of slurry. Because of its lower level of phosphate it is especially suitable for crops that have a low requirement for phosphate such as grains and beets. In areas where low emission application is critical (e.g. potatoes on clay), Betafert Basis can be of great value. Even after a ban on animal fertilizer in the autumn, Betafert Basis can be used for green manuring until the start of October.

The nitrogen in Betafert Vast is released slower than that in most animal fertilizers. This is favourable for crops that have a long growing season. Solid Betafert contains a lot of stable organic matter, which makes it exceptionally suitable as a soil improver. Cattle farms that have already filled their quotas (170/230 kg N) can still apply Betafert, provided the quotas for nitrogen and phosphate allow it.
